On 7 June 2022, the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 introduced the offence of strangulation or suffocation, recognising the serious harm these acts cause. The law also created a racially or religiously aggravated version of the offence, ensuring harsher penalties where bias is involved. These provisions apply only to acts committed after this date and are not retrospective.
